Art follows us in every venture, being a beautiful sunset or a mural on a corner of the street. My ability to create art represents my freedom of creativity within my mind and soul. Creativity allows us to share culture, traditions, beliefs, uniqueness, and so much more. This adds to the idea that art is more than what you simply see, allowing  our minds to create a message without feeling lost at sea.

My composition, Vencer El Sol, Spanish for “defeating the sun”, shapes a story of faith, endurance, dreams, and hard labor. My work is intended to symbolize the hardships my immigrant parents have had to endure in order to allow our family to overcome a generational cycle of agricultural labor. The girl in the center following through the door symbolizes my journey of opening new doors and overcoming obstacles in order to follow my dream of battling a scorching sun that lies over my parents every day and obtaining a better life given through their sacrifices. Rather than working with my hands or back, I aspire to repay my parents, who are my greatest inspiration and drive for all I do, by working with my mind through all I have learned and hope to continue learning through pursuing higher education.

Through my work, I hope to create hope that – “Si Se Puede”. By sharing my upbringing, I seek to inspire people to pursue their dreams and aspirations with greater vigor, unafraid of the challenges, or setbacks that could stand their way. Without fear, there is no drive, and without drive, new avenues cannot be discovered. In the end, I am confident that we can all "vencer el sol" that plays a role in our ambitions and achieve our goals.
