Sophia Knipp, The Game of Chance, acrylic, $350

Beauty is all around. My art is inspired by the joyous colors found in nature, everyday life, imagination, and expressions of art. Creating art brings me happiness and peace.  I hope others experience my art in a positive way. I am a Junior at Santa Catalina Upper School, and I hope to receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts and become an art designer or director.

My portfolio consists mostly of pieces made with acrylic paints and water-based oils on canvas to celebrate the beauty of the world. I enjoy working with these art mediums to help me create the perfect colors to bring my pieces to life. I have also experimented with mixed media, gouache, watercolor, colored pencil, and pastel.

In this piece, “The Game of Chance” I had the challenge of painting, for the first time, on a wooden panel with acrylic paints. To continue challenging myself, I decided to paint a more conceptual idea focusing on the randomness of life. As I grow closer to adulthood, I realize that so much of life and its outcomes are random. Inspired by my recent family vacation to Palm Springs, and pop art, I chose bold contrasting colors for this piece. I hope my piece “The Game of Chance” is relatable to others, and reminds them that although the seemingly randomness of life is chaotic and overwhelming, it can also be beautiful.
