Like music to the ear, art plays a melody that is held within the eye. To me, it holds what cannot be heard. Art shows a song of what is made and words that are speechlessly told. It holds a place in my heart that tells a silent yet loud story. Art is my gateway for expression as I am able to create something that does not require the words that I am unable to express. Like once said, “actions speak louder than words”, like my art speaks for my thoughts and feelings of love. The silence that surrounds me is broken once creativity leads me to a path full of melodies. I am able to create a piece of art that shares a sound that is seen with the heart. Art unfolds my true feelings of love and meaning. I feel that through art, I truly belong.

I decided to embed this idea into an ocean theme I have been working on. Shells to me have represented the idea that it holds a voice or holds the song of the ocean. I believe that someone has at least tried to hear the ocean from within a shell. With my shells, I want to share the melody of my piece and the love it brings from within. I want to share the peacefulness that comes with walking across the shoreline in search of pretty shells. My creations would bring out the essence of the conch shell that holds the words one wants to hear.

The method I used for both shells was handbuilding. The shells took form from one being a pinch pot itself and the other composed of two pinch pots creating a hollow form. Raised texture was added to both to represent the shell’s organic shapes.
