Each face represents the artificiality of people either through their shared malice for each other, indulgence in desires, or dull apathy -- going through the motions of life without a care for anyone or anything else. I originally intended to have one singular person at the center point of the faces, the woman on the bottom right, but I didn’t want to send the message that only one person out of all of humanity is genuine, when in fact, many people can be. Each person in the middle could easily join each strand or ring of faces where there is an artificial warm sense of community and acceptance and, from the sheer number of faces, many have chosen to do so. So, the people at the center are in the midst of choosing to keep their individuality or to join the crowd of faces.
